Rules Update - January 2015

New rule regarding previous members: BE AWARE, I have writers from every incarnation this sim has seen, both under my leadership and Shayne's. If you have ever been removed from any of these sims for misconduct or any other reason, all future characters must be vetted by the Admins and only then will we ask the sim as a whole to vote on both the char and the writer. You may be asked to provide a written letter addressing any concerns that arise before approval. Characters only require a majority vote but as a writer you must have unanimous approval.

SandBox characters are now open to anyone with a glimmered character. See the wiki here for details

Rules 1-2 Update: Writers will no longer be limited on the number of PCs they can have. Instead, each writer can only have one unawakened PC at a time and must keep up with all posts involving all their characters.

Rule 3 Update: NPCs will no longer be limited in number but must still remain unpowered. NPCs written by other writers are permitted, but post awakening must be approved before brought into the group dynamic.

Rule 4 Update: No change here, I control powersets very carefully.

Rule 5 Update: Powers will no longer be based on a ranking system, I have found that powersets are too dynamic and varied to accomplish this easily so instead I will rely on my admins to help me make sure each person has a balanced powerset. Rewards for achievements will now be the ability to have a powered NPC and power tricks and modifiers involving other characters. A power trick is when two specific characters combine their abilities to accomplish something more, Ex: Timo and Alexis combining their abilities to heal life threatening injuries. A power modifier is when a PC can use their power to augment or modify another mutant's abilities, Ex: Lily can combine with any char with psychic ability to compel someone to tell the truth, how that's done will depend on who the other char is.

Rule 6 Update: With the changes to rules 1-3, if someone wants to convert an NPC into a PC all they need to do is fill out the standard application and be approved by the rest of the sim.

Rules of behavior and conduct have not been updated.

Awards Update - January 2015

Awards have been simplified and the rewards adjusted to the new rules. Updates are marked with two stars (**) and italic text. A new award has also been added, Reader's Digest.

Negative awards will still be applied automatically by sim leadership but positive awards must now be requested by writers. If you feel you have earned an award, or if you feel another writer has earned a negative award. Use this form to submit it, all submissions are anonymous.

Award requests/nominations can be submitted by clicking here

The 3x3 award is given to any character that publishes three posts a week for three weeks in a row, or three posts a month for three months in a row, this is a one time award that does not need to be maintained to be kept.

** Reward: Custom nano armor. Until this award is earned Nano appears to be just a flat black suit with an emblem on the chest, after we will work together to create a custom suit just for you. This reward can only be claimed on a character that has nano.

A character is considered Invested when they have 20 published posts, at least 5 of which were written without other writers involved.

** Reward: One power modification of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice.

** With the current activity level, this award has been temporarily eliminated.

Spelling Test is awarded to any character who has one or less spelling errors in their posts for 3 straight posts. This award can be earned multiple times.

Reward: See A+

Grammar Freak is awarded to any character who has one or less grammar errors in their posts for 3 straight posts. This award can be earned multiple times.

Reward: See A+

A character earns an A+ if they have earned both Spelling Test and Grammar Freak three times. This award can be earned up to three times.

** Reward: One NPC powerset of GMs choosing for one character of the writers choice.

A Consistency Nazi does NOT harass their GMs or other writers about consistency, they DO, however, gently point out when there is a consistency error along with a suggestion on how to make it work without breaking consistency.

Reward: Knowing that you are keeping your GM's head from exploding.

We are all snarky and sarcastic. Deal with it. If you can't you will earn this "award" until you get over it. If you keep this award for a week you will get a public warning as a sim announcement, two weeks and you will be asked to leave the game.

Punishment: Possibility of removal from sim.

While the Consistency Nazi does not harass their GMs and other writers, the Backseat Driver does. This is not an award you want to see on your account. After one week you will get a public warning as a sim announcement, keep it on there for two weeks and you will be asked to leave the game. Do not meddle in the affairs of GM's for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Punishment: Possibility of removal from sim.

You are consistently inconsistent. A character incurs the title Inconsistency Nazi the third time another writer receives the Consistency Nazi award from pointing out an inconsistency within said characters posts. This is not a good thing at all. It means you need to start paying more attention to the details. Earning this award once will gain you a written warning, twice will result in disciplinary action up to and including removal from the sim.

Punishment: Possibility of removal from sim.

Not only do you participate in plotlines and story arcs, but you've helped write at least three of them yourself. An example of someone who earns the Storyboard Artist Award is a writer who helps design a rough outline for a main plot or arc that the entire game follows. This would not be a two- or three-character subplot thrown together between yourself and friends, but a story arc that the entire game follows along with. It shows that not only are you a very competent writer, but the game staff trusts you with the game's overall direction.

** Reward: One power trick of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice. The other character for this power trick will be based on the specific story in question. The primary writer for this storyline will have "control" of the power trick and their character must be the one to initiate the power trick.

The "Creative" award is granted to writers whose posts show exceptional creativity and imagination, not just in character dialogue but in descriptive and narrative ability. At least three posts must showcase the writers creativity or imagination for the writer to receive this award.

** Reward: One power modification of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice.

** With the rules changes, this award has been eliminated.

Writer consistently uses expansive vocabulary in their posts without sounding contrived or as though they have a monumental cylindrical ligneous mass up their posterior. (in case you missed the hint this is an example of what NOT to do) Three posts with clever or creative wording will earn you the title of Word Smith.

** Reward: One NPC powerset of GMs choosing for one character of the writers choice.

An Ignoramus is a writer that uses big words simply for the sake of sounding smart. Such as saying "a monumental cylindrical ligneous mass up their posterior" rather than "stick up their butt." A character will be deemed an Ignoramus any time the GM has to edit a post to make it be generally understood. This title will be removed only when a character has released two sequential posts without incurring any further negative rewards. If a writer does not earn removal within the next 5 posts they release it may result in disciplinary action up to and including removal from the sim.

Punishment: Possibility of removal from sim.

A Rules Lawyer is such a stickler for the rules that they constantly gripe when other bend or break them. Rules are there for a reason, and yes they need to be followed, but all rules have bending or breaking point and with a bunch of people in a creative setting this will happen. Remember, you do taste good with ketchup.

Punishment: Possibility of removal from sim.

A character that goes with the flow makes the GM's life easier. They never have to be reminded of the rules, they simply follow them. A character earns "Go with the Flow" if they complete "3x3" without incurring any GM wrath. If they maintain "Go with the Flow" for their next 3 posts (meaning a total of at least 12 posts without issue).

** Reward: One power trick of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice. The other character for this power trick will be based on the specific story in question. The primary writer for this storyline will have "control" of the power trick and their character must be the one to initiate the power trick.

A character is deemed Well Rounded when the writer has taken the time to fill out the full character questionnaire and submitted it. This is a long and very detailed form that helps writers fill in the blanks for their characters likes, dislikes, habits and motives.

The form can be found by clicking here.

** Reward: The writer may choose one of the following:

a. One power modification of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice.

b. One NPC powerset of GMs choosing for one character of the writers choice.

To earn the Reader's Digest award, a writer must write up a synopsis of their posts every few weeks. A section has been added to the biography form where you can write up a basic summary of what's happened to your character since it came to the sim. The expectation is that this will have a 1-3 sentence synopsis of what happened in each post. For each 6 month period covered the writer will earn this award. This award can be earned up to 3 times per character but must be maintained or powers and power tricks may start misbehaving.

** Reward: The writer may choose one of the following:

a. One power modification of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice.

b. One NPC powerset of GMs choosing for one character of the writers choice.

c. One power trick of the GM's choice for a character of the writer's choice.

Reward: One Level 3 Power of GMs choosing for the PC in question or one recurring NPC attached to that character. This is a 3 point value reward that can be split, but only among the principal PC and their recurring NPCs. Examples: There are 3 ways to divide the points, 3 points to 1 char, 2 points to 1 char and 1 point to another, or 1 point to each of the three chars. All powers are of GMs choosing, but point division is up to the writer.

Previous Rules and Awards

Characters and Powers

1. Each writer is allowed One Player Character to start.

2. Once that character earns the "Active," "Invested" and "3x3" award you will be allowed to make a second character. This privilege can be earned multiple times so long as no character falls below "Active" status. Should this happen the writer will be given two chances before they are asked to temporarily retire a character. If the issue occurs three times the writer will be asked to permanently retire that character.

3. Prior to awakening a Player Character can have a reasonable number of unpowered NPCs but the characters must be kept consistent. But once the character reaches the tower they are allowed a maximum of two recurring NPCs. A recurring NPC is any NPC that appears in more than three posts. These characters must have at least basic NPC bios that are adhered to. No NPC is allowed to have powers without pre-approval from the GM. NPCs can be rotated, if one leaves a character's life another can come in to take their place.

4. All powers, PC and NPC alike are assigned by the GM. You are welcome to ask for a specific powerset, or to not get a specific powerset, and I will take your request into account when assigning your powers but I am the GM and trust me I have a reason for the choices I make about powers.

5. All powers and drawbacks will be balanced carefully. There are 5 levels of powers which I as the GM will place each ability into: Lesser Power, Minor Power, Power, Major Power and Greater Power. Each power will be worth 1-5 points with Lesser being 1 and Greater being 5. An example of a Lesser power would be the ability to change the color of fruit, a quirky power that has no combat use. An example of a Greater Power would be ability to telekinetically lift a bus full of people.

Drawbacks will be counted in the same way and assigned category: Lesser Drawback, Minor Drawback, Drawback, Major Drawback and Greater Drawback. Each Drawback will earn your character negative points, with a Lesser Drawback earning you a -1 and so forth.

Each PC will be given a powerset culminating in a score between 6-10. GM Avatars and plot movers may range higher. As you earn the following rewards your score may increase, but no PC will ever go above a 15 without having shown extreme commitment to the sim and worked hard for it.

NPCs will never be allowed to have more than one power or a net score of 6 or more save in one specific instance. See Rule 6.

6. "But GMy dearest," you might say, "I love my NPC SOOOOO much, I want to make him/her into a PC with full PC level powers!" This can be done, but there is a cost. As stated earlier in the rules once you have earned Active, Invested and 3x3 award you can make the choice to turn one of your NPCs into a full PC. You will lose that NPC slot as associated with your first character but gain two new ones for the new PC. Overall, should you be given the "Hydra" award and have started a whole new character each time you were allowed, you could have as many as 3 PCs and 6 NPCs. Should you choose to upgrade one NPC your net total would be 3 PCs and 5 NPCs. Upgrade two and you would have 3 PCs and 4 NPCs.

Other Rules

Now for the rules of conduct, if you can't follow these you will be booted faster than Road Runner's Wedding Night.

Be nice. (this does not mean you have to be sugary sweet and polite to everyone at all times, this means that you don't get to be mean just because you are in a bad mood and feel like it.)

Chill the fuck out. This is a game. I don't do it for money, power, or to toy with the lives of characters... wait, the last one does kinda fit, but I operate this game because I love to write with other people and share a story with my friends.

Solos posts (meaning any post that does not involve another writer) should be more than a paragraph, if you are unsure put it into a word doc and get a word count, if you are anything above 800 you're golden.

Replies to Joint Posts (meaning any post that involves more than one writer) should be more than one sentence unless it really works and if it involves more than 2 writers should be taken in turns unless you have a damn good reason for extra passes. I know that there will be times when I cannot reply to a post for a few hours and there is nothing I hate more then to come into a post I am working on with multiple other writers only to find that my character has been completely disregarded for three pages.

Any post over 3 pages in a word processing program set to Arial size 11 need to be broken up into 3-4 page chunks. These will count as multiple posts when considered against number of posts so this is in your best interest.

Keep things PG-13, anything more than that, anything you wouldn't want to let a tween watch needs to fade to black. You can write it, but don't post it. Feel free to offer to send out the more detailed post for those that want to read it, but for the public site, keep it clean. We recommend saving the full post to Google Drive or a similar service that allows shared documents so that you and your fellow writers can read it but it can be shared on an individual basis. For a tutorial on how this is done check out the Wiki page: Directors Cut Tutorialwritten by Don.

And finally this isn't so much a rule as a GM pet peeve. Having been writing online for over 18 years I have noticed a pattern of writers overusing rape, prostitution and sexual abuse. It's the go to action for many people when they want to add drama or pity to their character, or to inspire others to feel protective. A talented writer doesn't need this crutch there are many other ways to accomplish the same end.

So here's where the rule part comes in. Anyone that wants to include sexual abuse needs to clear it through me. This means in your bio or in posts. It is the one and only plot line that requires my approval but it is my feeling that this is necessary to ensure that the subject is treated with the gravity and seriousness it deserves. I will not only need to know the story and how you intend to present the abuse, but why. And 'because I want to' will not be a valid reason. Any posts released with this content without prior approval will be removed and the plot line will not be approved, ever.

To be given this award, a writer must have the maximum of 3 writer characters (NPC's notwithstanding) and must also be considered "Active" and "Invested" with all three characters before this award can be given.

Reward: Three Major Powers of GMs choosing for characters of the writers choice. Powers can go to any PC or NPC. This award can only be earned once per writer.
